Immortality and Petty Vandalism

Even the indestructible youth apparently find time to secretly contemplate the inevitable. The majority of us look for ways to skirt it. One such method thought to somehow cheat death seems to involve the leaving behind of some lasting mark on the world.

Some of us aim for fame, others for infamy. Some set their sights on the presidency, others set theirs on their presidents. Some of us simply engrave obscene messages on the walls of our alma matters.

It was still there. I could not believe my eyes. Some part of me had always believed that my minor contribution to the historical record had been painted into oblivion mere hours after its hasty completion.

But there it was, years later, a monument to my well-spent and otherwise beloved high-school years:

“Die trendy bastards.”

Oh how it still rolled off of the tongue.
